Hey there! It is super common to get braces these days, and so many of my friends wanted to know what they feel like, so I thought that I would share my experience.
I have had a piece of metal in my mouth for as long as I can remember. Seriously. A very long time. When I was about 8 (I think?) I had a plate to widen my mouth to create more space. Then only about a year or two later I had yet another plate in my mouth, but I really can’t remember what that one was for. And then in grade 6, I got braces.
Getting braces on didn’t hurt any more than getting a plate in my mouth, but it was extremely uncomfortable for the first two weeks. In the first week, I preferred to drink more milkshakes, yogurt and other things that wouldn’t require chewing (and were delicious!). Normally the pain goes away within a week or two and after that it only hurts when its being ajusted.
The only thing that really annoyed me about my braces when I had them on was that it was harder to brush my teeth. It is super important to brush your teeth well when you have braces, but the braces are an obstacle you have to workaround. Also occasionally my braces would get caught on something like a clothing item, which would be super awkward 😳.
I got my braces off about three years after I got them on, when I was in grade 9. I found getting them off was actually really uncomfortable as well. It didn’t hurt like it did when I got my braces on, but it made me feel like my teeth were almost slimy because there wasn’t a metal barrier between my lip and my mouth. This went away with time as I got used to how my teeth felt.
Despite the discomfort at times, I think that getting braces was definitely worth it. My teeth are so much nicer and straighter than they were before which gives me so much more confidence than I would have if my teeth were not in line. I still have to wear a retainer at night to help keep my teeth in place, but I would rather that then to have all the work on my teeth undone.
Do any of you guys have braces or are going to get braces soon? What has been your experience? Comment down below with your thoughts.
